This idea all started back in 2020 when I had just moved to Austin, TX. Being new in a big city, I was excited and hopeful to meet new people. Until, only 3 weeks later, COVID happened. Lost for how to make connections in a socially distanced world, and knowing no one in a new city, I took to the dating apps.
While swiping away on multiple apps and Bumble BFF, a theme appeared. I noticed something we all had in common, a similar phrase was often used. Which was something along the lines of:
“Honestly at this point, I don’t really care. I just want to get out of the house and meet new people”.
Luckily, I found a gf on Bumble BFF who invited me to tag along to some exclusive fitness meetups at the park (socially distanced of course). We participated in “Sprint Squad” where there was a live DJ and a host MCing various activities for us to do.
“Run to that tree, and on your way back introduce yourself to someone new”
Out of breath and wheezing, we stumbled over our words and the social anxiety of what to say after “hello” kicked in.
I loved the idea of merging fitness communities, but felt like there were some changes that could be made to evoke an even deeper level of connection and to offer more variety.
Thus, the infamous Field Day of 2021 came about. Where I wrangled 50 strangers from various dating apps that all in some way said they were just looking to make a friend. We had a live DJ, played kickball, cornhole, giant Jenga, giant chess, and I led them in a 30 min “mingle” where I told each participant to find someone new they hadn’t spoken to yet and gave them the duration of one song to exchange their answers to a prompt I gave them.
It’s been 3 years since this event, and I still get texts regularly from those in attendance asking me to bring it back. 3 sets of BFFs were formed that day who still talk and hang out regularly.
After a bad break-up and another cross country move, Morgantown/Pittsburgh has stolen my heart. Navigating the social scene all over again, the people I have met here are incredible and I want the chance to give back by bringing a little bit of Austin’s “weirdness” and always having something fun to do, to this community.
Among a variety of smaller events, Field Day is making a come back along with many more events to get you out meeting and making friends in real life.
The ultimate goal is to host larger monthly/quarterly “Group Fitness” events and a once yearly “Field Day” with bracket-styled competition. The unique part about it is, who you will be teamed up with for the day is based off your questionnaire. Offering a refreshing and unique way to meet new people with similar interests while sharing in the comradery and fun of sports.
We are always looking to partner up with other social groups, clubs, athletic associations for more community involvement. Please reach out if you think we could make magic!
